Special Olympics World Winter Games 2017

„Heartbeat for the World“ – under this slogan the 11th Special Olympics World Winter Games 2017 for people with intellectual disabilities are going to take place from March 14th to 25th 2017. Graz Airport, as official partner, is looking forward to this worldwide biggest sport and humanitarian event in Graz, Schladming and Ramsau am Dachstein.

Special Olympics – worldwide engagement
Special Olympics is the worldwide biggest sports movement for people with intellectual disabilities and was founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in the U.S. in the year 1968. Until today the Special Olympics program offers a variety of training opportunities and competitions for about 4,5 million athletes from 175 countries. Every two years national summer respectively winter games are organized in the countries. Additionally, every two years there are World Winter Games, where countries around the world participate.

Diversity in practice

About 3000 athletes of 110 nations are expected to participate in the World Winter Games 2017 in Austria. Nine different winter disciplines will be carried out: Speed Skating, Floor hockey, Floorball and Ice Stock Sport are going to take place in the ´Messe Congress Graz´, Figure Skating will take place in the „Stadthalle Graz“. The Ski Alpin as well as Snowboard competitions are going to be carried out in Schladming- Rohrmoos, the nordic competitons (Cross Country Skiing and Snow shoeing) are going to take place in Ramsau.

Heartbeat for the World
Next to the athletic competitions many further social stimulus are set. The opening ceremony is going to take place in the „Planai Stadion“ in Schladming, the closing ceremony is going to be held in the „UPC Arena“ in Graz. Beyond that there are already numerous different activities and programmes in the run- up to the games in order to perceive and experience the spirit of this special event.

Athletic heralds… the Pre-Games 2016
The Pre- Games are already going to take place from January 10th to 15th 2016, where nine disciplines on 70 percent of the original SOWWG venues are going to be carried out. At the same time the Pre- Games are the National Winter Games of Special Olympics Austria with international participation.
